ISTE 1.d. Teachers model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments.
EDTC 5310 was the first course I attended as part of my graduate studies at Texas State. In addition to being an introduction to graduate studies; the course provided an overview and introduction to the use of the most common Web 2.0 tools in the classroom. The course proved to be very beneficial. I was motivated to immediately implement many of the strategies in my own classroom.
Wiki creation provided my students with an appealing outlet to share multimedia projects. I teach recent immigrants. Therefore, my students produced artifacts that supported second language acquisition such as visuals of common English sight words labeled and accompanied by sound files.
The primary focus of EDTC 5310 was to create a unit with one focus and multiple components. I chose to create a unit of study to support recent immigrants understanding of the IPC (Integrated Physics and Chemistry) concept of simple machines.
In summary, this course supported my work as a sheltered English teacher. In teaching English language learners, it is crucial to scaffold understanding with context embedded vocabulary accompanied by significant visual support. The strategies presented in this course reinforced that practice.
This is the wiki we created to share our products and refelctions with the class. Some of the formatting has changed after being removed from PBWiki.
|Wiki created with students||
After beginning a wiki in EDTC 5310, I helped my students to create a wiki and add content area vocabulary.
|A 'photostory' created with FOSS tools||
This 'photostory' was created with free and open source tools. It is an important artifact because it shows growth. This early product is too long and lacks snap. There are some good ideas present; howeveer, it should be remade to be briefer and clearer. The flv compression may leave the viewer wondering about the source of the poor audio and video quality.
